Building a Raised Bed. it

Building a Raised Bed. it won't win any design awards, but i built a raised, brick vegetable / herb bed this weekend. it's about 10' x 3' and 10 inches (4 bricks) deep. before starting, i covered the ground with all the newspapers we had (about one week's worth). after i built up the walls, i filled it with mostly-done compost. sometime in the next few months i'll buy a couple of bags of soil to dump on top.

I am a older lady that just started gardening after I retired.
I wish to put in a raised flower bed next to the deck. Can I
do it this way. Put a thick layer of newspapers over the top of
the grass, outline the whole thing with interlocking bricks, fill
with soil, peat moss etc. and plant the perennials? How deep should
I have the soil? I thought your instructions sounded so easy even
I should be able to do it. Thank you very much

I think that raised beds are fine. I have a few in my garden and they look quite tidy.
